Supetar is the largest town on the island of Brac boasting a population of 3,500. With its beautiful beaches and fine restaurants it's a great introduction to the rest of the island, it also offers easy access to the mainland with an hourly ferry service out of Split.
Supetar is home to many impressive historical sites including a stunning mausoleum and the Church of the Annunciation of Mary (Crkva Marijina Navjescenja) From Supetar you can easily visit other great destinations in and around Brac such has Trogir, Hvar and the island of Vis.
Supetar has been inhabited by people since roughly the end of the Stone Age. The local parish, the Church of St. Peter, saw construction in 1733 on the site of the original 5th century basilica. In front of the church lies a beautiful pre-Christian mosaic which dates back to the 6th century. The surrounding buildings, Leroj, the Bell Tower and the Church Museum, are also great places to visit on your trip to Supetar. Along the road to Donji Humac you can see the Church or St. Luke, a pre-Romanesque church dating back to the 11th or 12th century.
In the areas surrounding Supetar among the vineyards and olive gardens you can see many small, circular stone houses called "Bunje". Today these bunje are used for storing farm equipment but they were in fact the homes of Supetar's ancient inhabitants. Similar kinds of ancient construction can be seen all over the Mediterranean, including in places such as Kreta, Catalonia, Liguria and Sardegnam.
Supetar was made the administrative center of Brac in 1827 and since then has been considered one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. Not only can you see stunning cultural and historical monuments in Supetar but you can also find a variety of recreational and sporting activities.
Surrounding Supetar's beautiful beaches are lush pine forests; this unique terrain is what makes Supetar such a popular summer vacation destination. The Supetar coast between Splistska and Mirca is the best place there is for swimming.
