Povlja village is a lovely place settled in a cove which shares the same name. It is located in the northeast coast of Brac, 10kmn east of the ferry port of Sumartin. The occupations of the people of Povlja tend to focus on vineyards, farming, olives, fishing and of course tourism.
Roman galleys were commonly anchored off the shores of Povlja centuries ago, thus it is a great destination to see a variety archaeological wonders. There are several remains from the early Christian period, this includes the ruins of a Christian Basilica dating back to sometime between the 5th and 6th centuries.
The local parish church in Povlja also features an octagonal baptistery containing a Cupola, it is the only one which has survived in Croatia and is still used by the church. It also has many surviving frescoes dating back to these early centuries.
Master Radovan chiseled an inscription into one of the lintels of this structure back in 1250 AD. Today this is viewed as the oldest known example of Western Cyrillic script to be found in all of Croatia, this and many other ancient pieces of art can be found at the Archaeological Museum in Split.
Povlja is home to beautiful beaches and clear bays with a safe habour. If you like to stay active on your vacations you can find tennis courts and a football field in Povlja.
