The island of Brac has a pleasant climate with mild winters and warm, balmy summers with some variations between the coastal regions and those more toward the islands center. The north of the island does at times experience some of the winter chill sweeping in from the mainland.
The climate on Brac is intrinsically influenced by the local flora, sadly the Holm Oak which once dominated the forests of the island have decreased in numbers over the years. Rampant cutting and burning in recent years has decimated the tree population which is now being rapidly replaced by Macchia.
However, Brac still boasts many other beautiful tree species such as the Black Pine, Montpelier, Aleppo Pince and of course the common Oak tree. A full quarter of the island of Brac is covered in forests, common to them is Aleppo Pince (Pinus Halapensis), a tree which can grow as high as 300m above sea level.
With flora comes fauna, Brac is home to over 130 different species of bird. You can find birds in abundance throughout the year, Brac is a migration stop for many bird species.
As far as domestic animals go the goat has long been an inhabitant of the island. Sheep have also been part of farm life on Brac for centuries and there are many farms to be seen all over the island.
Another popular resident of Brac is the Fat Dormouse, it has become somewhat of a mascot of the island with its beautiful furry tail. It is also known in Brac cuisine as a local delicacy.
Of all the snakes on Brac the most well-known is the Ashen Horned Viper, it has two venomous teeth and a small horn on its head. It can be recognized by the dark jagged markings on its back. However there is no need to fear these snakes, they only attack when they feel threatened.
