On the south coast of the Dalmatian island of Brac, there is an exclusive seaside resort called Bol and a picturesque historic town that is the oldest on the island. The name of the town Bol comes from the word "Vallum," a Latin word meaning "Earth Fortification with Palisades."
Bol has become a favourite tourist destination over the years because of its gorgeous pebble and sand beaches that spread for more than 10km down the coast of Brac. One of the most stunning beaches on the Adriatic can be found at Bol - the famous Zlatni Rat.
High above Bol in the mountain ridge known as The Crown of Bol (Bolska Kruna) lay the remains of an ancient Illyrian fortress called Kostilo, as well as the highest mountain peak in the Adriatic islands - Mount Vidova.
Brac's main airport is very accessible from mainland Europe, and is only 13km from Bol. With its fabulous sights, unspoilt natural landscapes, clean air, blue sea, and never cloudy skies, Bol is a destination that's easy to get to and easy to lose yourself in. It's lovely stone alleyways and large open squares are reminders of its historic past, and lend it a distinctly Mediterranean charm.
Bol has many international gastronomic delights to offer in the form of wonderful restaurants, bars with local specialties, and exquisite local wines. And for those who enjoy a more energetic night life, there are plenty of discos and night clubs.
Cultural and historical entertainments abound in Bol, including the folk feast called "Our Lady of the Snows," which happens on August 5th each year to commemorate the day when, as legend has it, it snowed in Bol.
Bol also has plenty to offer for those who love sports, such as the 25 tennis courts from which you can choose, and a central court that can accommodate up to 1,800 people. The central court is where the WTA Croatian Bol Ladies Open is held.
You can also enjoy many other sports such as: windsurfing, boccia, a wide variety of water sports, indoor football, volleyball, and basketball. Bol is the place to be if you want an exciting getaway with lots to do and see.
